Silent Running
Bruce Dern stars in this ecological sci-fi drama as Freeman Lowell, the lone human crew member on the Valley Forge, a vast spacecraft carrying the remnants of post-apocalypse earth's plant life. But when he's ordered to destroy his precious cargo, and his robot crewmates are ready to comply, Lowell must take drastic action. It's unsurprising that the film is visually impressive, given that it was the directorial debut of special effects maestro Douglas Trumbull, but Silent Running's greatest strength is perhaps its poignant pathos, and its environmental message is at least as relevant now as it was when the film was released. Film4 screens six nights of 1970s American classics, from Tuesday 22 to Sunday 27 August. A sextet of hits from the decade that gave us some of Hollywood's greatest films.

When Marnie Was There
Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi's animation for Studio Ghibli is a mysterious story about an intense adolescent friendship. Artistic and asthmatic, Anna is an adopted child who feels neglected by her parents. For health reasons, they send her to spend the summer with a couple who live near a tidal marsh. Anna finds an apparently abandoned mansion on the marsh, where she meets golden-haired Marnie, an enigmatic girl her own age. The two form a passionate friendship and Anna is drawn into Marnie's dream-like world at the mansion, which features her forbidding nurse and a glittering social life that appears only at high tide. Anna does not at first notice any ominous undercurrents, nor the lapses of memory she suffers when she is with Marnie. But as the confusion between fantasy and reality grows, Anna begins to piece together Marnie's story. The English language version, screened here, features the voices of Geena Davis and Ellen Burstyn. Premiere.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Adapted from the bestselling 'novel in cartoons' by Jeff Kinney, Thor Freudenthal's comedy is the story of pre-teen Greg Heffley and his misadventures as he starts life in an American middle school. Teased by his older brother Rodrick at home and reluctantly falling in with the geek crowd at school, Greg details his experiences in his journal as he attempts to clamber up from the bottom rung of the student social ladder and get into the school yearbook. There's plenty of slapstick and broad humour, as well as a touching if lopsided relationship between Greg and his rotund best friend Rowley.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Manny the mammoth, Diego the sabre-toothed tiger and Sid the sloth journey far from the frigid world they call home in Carlos Saldanha and Mike Thurmeier's third helping of the family-friendly prehistoric animated adventure. When Sid finds a nest of apparently abandoned eggs in an icy cavern, he raises them as his own. But the nestlings turn out to be Tyrannosaurs, and when the rightful mother returns to claim her brood, she takes Sid away with them. Diego and Manny's rescue mission leads them to a hot underground world ruled by dinosaurs. Can a mad weasel called Buck lead them to Sid, and then get everyone back to the frozen surface again? Scrat the perpetually nut-seeking rodent makes his usual appearance, and the impressive CGI from Blue Sky Studios more than holds its own against rivals Dreamworks and Pixar.

Upon arrival the alien takes the form of widow Jenny's deceased husband, but the unfamiliar body presents challenges for the host who hasn't quite accomplished human movement. Jenny, terrified by the apparent resurrection of her lost love and, later, understanding the visitor's true identity, desperately tries to escape. But with government officials in pursuit of the alien, deeming his arrival a threat to national security, and a scientist keen to beat them to it, the visitor must convince Jenny to help him if he's to get back home. The French Connection
William Friedkin's multi-Oscar-winning gritty urban crime drama tells the real-life story of two New York narcotics cops' attempts to bring down a French drugs kingpin. Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider play detectives James 'Popeye' Doyle and Buddy Russo who, while investigating relatively minor-league drugs pushers, learn that a massive shipment of very pure heroin is about to arrive in the city. The heroin is being imported from Marseille by Alain Charnier, who is prepared to do anything, including murdering policemen, to get his narcotics out on the streets. But, although they know it's on its way, Doyle and Russo don't know how. And they make life more difficult for themselves by battling with FBI agent Mulderig, who's also working the case. Hickman was the stunt driver pursued by Steve McQueen in Bullitt; and was also behind the wheel for the famous chase in this movie, which was shot in real traffic.

Eclipse
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart star in the third instalment of the teen fantasy romance-thriller, with David Slade taking custody of the director's chair for this outing. Bella Swan remains torn over whether to plight her troth to the chill-skinned, undead Edward Cullen or instead opt for Jacob Black, whose warm-bloodedness is offset by his periodic bouts of lupine transformation. But rivalries and romantic choices must be set aside when an old enemy unleashes a merciless horde of 'newborn' vampires, aiming to kill Bella and settle a score with Edward. Also starring Bryce Dallas Howard. While the narrative is, naturally, bound by Stephenie Meyer's theme of sexual abstinence, Slade's direction brings new vigour to the action scenes and the backstory flashbacks. Edited for content.

Mr Popper's Penguins
Jim Carrey stars in director Mark Waters' family comedy, loosely based on a classic children's book. Tom Popper is a New York property shark with a failed marriage and a strained relationship with his kids. Popper's own father was an explorer. His absence while Tom was growing up may explain Tom's emotional disengagement, but a more tangible legacy is the arrival of a crate of six gentoo penguins - a bequest from the old man's deathbed. Manhattan isn't the obvious place in which to care for the birds, but Popper quickly bonds with his charges, and his adventures with them act as a springboard for a possible reconciliation with his family - as well as ample opportunity for Carrey to ply his trademarked rubber-faced, flexed-limbed comedic turn. The only dark cloud on Popper's horizon is the zoo's Nat Jones, who believes the creatures would be better off with him than in Popper's apartment.

Rango
Animated comedy. Director Gore Verbinski teams up with his Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp for a clever and funny take on the well-worn western template of the outsider arriving to save a small town in peril. The town in question is the sun-baked Dirt, and Depp voices Rango, the hapless pet chameleon who stumbles into it. Having accidentally slain the eagle that's been terrorising Dirt's motley crew of critter citizens, Rango is taken for an action hero and made sheriff in the hope that he'll also deliver Dirt from the evil gunslinger Rattlesnake Jack and solve the mystery of the town's ever-dwindling water supply. A host of desert animals are brought to vivid life, and the film wittily spoofs the western genre while incorporating homages to numerous cinematic landmarks, from Apocalypse Now to Star Wars. It also prides itself on its own quirkiness, marking it out as one of the more adult-friendly animated blockbusters.

The Three Musketeers
Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson and Luke Evans play the titular trio of guardsmen in Paul WS Anderson's steampunk take on Alexandre Dumas's classic swashbuckling adventure. The action begins in Venice, where Athos, Porthos, and Aramis steal Leonardo da Vinci's plans for an airship. But, instead of arriving back in Paris as heroes, they find themselves out on their ear, as the Musketeers company is disbanded by Cardinal Richelieu, who is furious at their 'failure'; the trio have been deceived by the double-dealing Milady de Winter, who passed the stolen plans on to England's Duke of Buckingham. In fact, the Cardinal was complicit in their 'failure' - the incident being part of his elaborate plan to wrest power from King Louis and Queen Anne. As soon as the Musketeers discover this, they set out, aided by the young D'Artagnan, to save France from the megalomaniac cleric.

Jack's corpse goes on to say that David must avoid this at all costs, and must therefore kill himself. Unfortunately, David ignores this advice... When the film is scary, it's absolutely terrifying, and when it's funny, it's hilarious; and the Oscar-winning special effects remain genuinely horrific. Also featuring Brian Glover as a belligerent Yorkshireman; and a very early appearance from Rik Mayall.

The Warriors
Michael Beck and James Remar star in Walter Hill's visceral, stylised thriller. In the gang-infested New York of the 1970s, the most powerful of all the gang leaders, the Gramercy Riffs' Cyrus, calls a citywide truce at an unarmed meeting of gangs. Among those attending are nine members of the Warriors, who hail from Coney Island. But then, mid-speech, Cyrus is assassinated and the blame is falsely pinned on the Warriors, whose leader is promptly murdered by other attendees. This leaves Ajax and Swan to quickly resolve who now leads the Warriors and fight their way back home across the dangerous turfs of their rivals to the safety of Coney Island. With Deborah van Valkenburgh and David Patrick Kelly. The final night of Film4's run of six 1970s American classics, all hits from the decade that gave us some of Hollywood's greatest films.

The Book of Life
An acclaimed animated adventure that draws its inspiration from the folklore surrounding Mexico's colourful Day of the Dead celebrations. The film has minimal exposition; its spare narrative being tied together by a sequence of visually arresting scenes - both in the city and the nearby wilds of nature - all shot with a hallucinatory feel by Daniel Landin, and suffused with Mica Levi's award-winning score. Johansson's performance - she was the only professional actor involved - shines through. A Film4 production.

Baby's Day Out
Patrick Read Johnson's comedy, scripted by John Hughes, stars Joe Mantegna, Joe Pantoliano and Brian Haley as Eddie, Norby and Veeko, three inept criminals who kidnap Baby Bink, the son of a rich Chicago family. But while they are negotiating the ransom, Baby Bink escapes and begins to make his way back home. As the trio chase him, the infant manages to avoid a series of violent hazards, which his pursuers run straight into. The film owes much to the kind of cartoon violence that Road Runner inflicted upon Wile E Coyote, where falls and explosions are slapstick rather than fatal, while the interaction of the three criminals carries Hughes' trademark quick-fire humour.
